Billion-Dollar Weather Disasters
World-wide Tally (Jan–Dec, 2013)
In 2013, 41 weather disasters totaling
at least $1 billion each was a new record for our planet. Prior to 2010, the
average number of billion-dollar disasters per year was around 18.
Though it’s
difficult to use monetary losses as evidence, it is clear that our climate and
our planet are changing, and we’re paying the price for it. The most expensive
global disaster of 2013 was the June flood in Central Europe, which cost $22
billion. The deadliest disaster was Super Typhoon Haiyan, which killed about
8,000 people as it made its way through the Philippines. Six countries have set
