China’s biggest skyscraper

Shanghai Tower, China’s tallest building and the world’s No. 2 in height at 125 stories, held a topping-out ceremony today, more than four years after the start of construction in 2008.

The views of Shanghai are unrivaled. Have a look at the structure and how it went up in the heart of the city’s Lujiazui financial district.

Its most advanced and environmentally friendly. Sustainability is at the heart of its design, with the tower built with windload-reducing glass façade the reduces the amount of steel needed for its build by 25 percent, a vertical-axis wind turbine array that generates up to 350,000 kW-H of its electricity needs per year, and a heating and cooling system that uses geothermal energy sources. Combined, these features grant the Shanghai Tower an incredibly low carbon footprint, arguably making it a worthy blueprint for all future skyscraper construction.
